Guess What? Updated version of OverDrive app now available
OverDrive recently launched a new version of its app for Android, iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch) and Windows 8 devices.
The updated app eliminates the need to setup Adobe authorization  during installation, which will reduce library support questions and help users who like to sync their downloads across multiple devices.

First-time users are prompted to create an
OverDrive account. Existing users will see no change when they update to the newest app version.

Additional updated features include:
·   Updated OverDrive Help articles and videos.
·   Users under the age of 13 can anonymously authorize the OverDrive app without creating an OverDrive account.
·   The app’s name is simplified with the words Media Console removed.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS

Saul Alexander Gallery call for submissions
The Saul Alexander Foundation Gallery at CCPL’s Main Library provides space for juried art exhibitions from individuals or groups. Preference is given to works reflecting experiences and viewpoints of South Carolina residents.
Artists interesting in displaying their work during 2015 should complete and submit an application by September 30. A Gallery Committee composed of local art professionals select artists and craftsman for one-month exhibition periods. Decisions are based solely on the quality of the work submitted.
Submission guidelines:
In addition to the application, artists must submit a current resume plus photographs or digital examples of eight-12 pieces of their work. The examples must represent the style and type of work intended for display. Each example should be labeled with the artist’s name, the title of the artwork, the medium used and the size. The work should not have been previously exhibited at the library. Preference is given to newly created works. Artists must be at least 18 years old.
Once the Gallery Committee makes its selections, the chosen artists will be contacted and notified of when their items will be displayed. The library’s executive director has final approval for all exhibits.
How to apply:
Submissions to exhibit will be accepted through September 30, 2014. The works of each selected artist or group will be exhibited for one month beginning in February of 2015. Applications, which must be included with an artist's submission, can be downloaded online, picked up at the Main Library's Reference Department or received by calling 843-805-6949. For more information, please email
manningm@ccpl.org.
Gallery Exhibit Standards:
  • Works on paper and photographs should be protected with glass or acrylic glazing. Acetate or shrink-wrapped works are not acceptable.
  • Alternative framing (with artwork sandwiched between glazing and backing) held together by plastic or metal brackets is acceptable if a secure hanger is provided.
  • For mediums not requiring glazing, such as paintings on canvas or fiber art, a sturdy framework with hanging wire is required. Lattice strip framing is acceptable for paintings on canvas.
  • The gallery utilizes a cable suspension system. A secure hanging wire attached to the picture is required.
  • Artists will be required to hang their own works. Special hanging arrangements will be made for library sponsored exhibitions. All hangings are subject to the approval of the gallery committee.
  • Case displays will be subject to the approval of the gallery committee.
  • Dimensions of the Saul Alexander Gallery are as follows: When entering the gallery, the left wall is 17'8", the rear wall is 14'6" and the right wall is 19'2". The room height is slightly more than 8'.
Installation Standards:
  • A committee member will approve the installation of exhibits in advance and after completion.
  • Artwork, labels or business cards must be on heavy stock and must not be glued or nailed to the wall. Double-sided tape or pushpins are permitted.
  • If the artwork is for sale, the artist must submit a list containing titles and descriptions as well as prices. The list will be available to the public at the information desk. The artist may have business cards at the exhibit.
  • Works that are sold must remain in the gallery until the end of the exhibition, except under special circumstances.
  • The library will not be responsible for artwork not picked up at the agreed upon time.
  • The library will generate press releases for the opening of an exhibition and an announcement of the exhibition will be included in the library's monthly calendar. The artist may send out their own publicity at their own expense.
Agreement:
  • It is agreed that the Charleston County Public Library will not be responsible in any manner to the exhibitor or the owner for the items or fixture pertaining thereto, in the exhibition in case of theft, destruction or injury thereto from any cause.
  • It is agreed also that the exhibitor or owner or both named hereto, are responsible for timely delivery, hanging and pickup of their work.
  • It is agreed that the number of items, including frames and mountings, which may be exhibited in a given space and the arrangements thereof, will conform to all requirements as may be prescribed by the gallery committee.
  • It is agreed that the exhibitor is responsible for transporting the art works to the library, for planning the display, arrangement or hanging of the exhibit, and for providing necessary materials and tools.

FREE LIBRARY CARDS!

September is Library Card Sign-up Month

The most important back-to-school supply for students is free

Charleston County Public Library is encouraging county residents to sign up for a free card - adding it to every child's school supply list and to every adult's wallet or key ring. Also during the month, current cardholders who have lost their card can get a free replacement, a service that normally costs $2.

This nationwide campaign is held each September to promote signing up in conjunction with the start of school. Studies have shown that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to use the library as a source of lifelong learning.
In an effort to reach students as they transition from one school or grade to another, Library staff visit schools with a special focus on students in kindergarten and sixth grade. In 2013, there were 260,139 library cardholders, library staff registered 1,068 students and 984 of those used their cards during the year.

In Charleston County, students can get help through the Library's Ask-A-Question reference service where they can get help from a Reference Librarian by visiting a branch, calling 805-6930, e-mailing askaquestion@ccpl.org or text 66756 and begin your question with askccpl.

The Library's Web site - www.ccpl.org - also offers Homework Help under Services for Children and provides free access to dozens of reliable reference databases in its Resources section, many of them available remotely simply by logging in with a Library card number. Additionally, users have access to free downloadable eBooks, audio books, music and digital magazines. Don't wait, apply online for a library card today.
