BOOK REVIEW

The PastThe Past
by Tessa Hadley

"A novel about a family vacation is often used as a device to bring out the worst flaws of the characters; here, it is used to bring out the best of Hadley's writing talent. She brings the family together, introducing them one by one: Harriet, the outdoorsy one; Alice, the dramatic one; Fran, the motherly one; Roland, the scholarly brother. The siblings, along with assorted children, spouses, and a young friend, spend three weeks in the crumbling house that belonged to their grandparents, trying to decide what must be done with it. Readers who enjoy character-driven novels, such as ones by Kate Atkinson, Margaret Drabble, or Jane Gardam, will welcome this novel."
—Yvette Olson, Magnolia's Bookstore, Seattle, WA

NEW DVDS

Patrons sometimes ask us if we have a list of our DVDs.  Because we have so many, and we are always getting new ones, it is impossible to print a list of our collection. We have thousands and thousands.

To search for a DVD in our catalog, you may search by title. If you are looking for a particular actor, use the "author" field to search.  You should get a list of all of the movies of that actor that are in the Charleston County Library system.

To find new DVDs, go to our catalog and find the New Materials box on the right side, and click New DVDs.

If there is a particular movie that we don't have in our collection, there is the option of ordering it through our Interlibrary Loan service.  We are usually able to borrow almost any movie from another library system.  There is a $2.00 fee per item for this service.  Please ask for more information at the Reference Desk.

Here are a couple of new DVDs:

"Black Mountain Side"
 Summary:
Canada's remote wilderness becomes a chilly catalyst for terror as a group of archaeologists uncover a strange structure buried in the snow. As paranoia and mistrust take hold, the researchers turn on each other, encouraged by visions of a mysterious figure lurking at the fringes of the woods.

"Captive"
Summary:
When Brian Nichols, on the run as the subject of a city-wide manhunt and desperate to make contact with his newborn son, takes recovering meth addict Ashley Smith hostage in her own apartment, she turns for guidance to Rick Warren's bestselling inspirational book, The Purpose Driven Life. While reading aloud, Ashley and her would-be killer each face crossroads where despair and death intersect hope.
