Giving Thanks to Our Veterans

The month of November has a lot of important dates and holidays including Election Day and Thanksgiving Day. It’s also Military Family Appreciation Month, and Veterans Day is Friday, November 11. In honor of these important holidays, Mount Pleasant Regional Library will be having the 6th Annual Giving Thanks to Our Veterans donation drive to support the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC).

Throughout the month of November, we will be collecting items to send to the VAMC including:

* Socks

* Men’s and women’s underwear (sizes M-2XL)

* T-shirts (sizes M-3XL)

* Women’s sports bras (sizes M-2XL)

* Sweatpants (sizes M-3XL)

* Sweatshirts (sizes M-3XL)

* Athletic shoes (9-13 men’s; 7-11 women’s)

* Deodorant (full-sized containers, men’s and women’s)

* Body wash (full-sized bottles, men’s and women’s)

The donations collected will be used to provide assistance to Veteran patients at the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC. According to the VAMC’s Voluntary Service Program Manager, Vicki Johnson, “many of these Veterans are in our homeless program or are in other circumstances that require a little extra help. The generosity of our local community speaks volumes to the men and women who have served our country.”

The men and women of our Armed Forces are modern-day superheroes who take on the all-encompassing duty to serve our country while asking for little to nothing in return. We want to take this time to give thanks to our Veterans, Active Duty Military Personnel, and their families for all they do and the sacrifices they make.

Please help us to support those who have done so much for us by donating to the drive. For more information about donating to the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC visit: http://www.charleston.va.gov/giving/index.asp.

HAUNTED HOUSES

It's that time of year for scary books.

Cherie Priest is an author who loves the feel of things—tangible objects, especially ones that hold in their heft a heap of history. Her new novel, The Family Plot, has the perfect concept to indulge this enthusiasm: A salvage company from Nashville, Tennessee, is hired by an elderly woman to dismantle and sell off every beautiful thing in her family’s old homestead before the grand house is demolished. And where is this gorgeous edifice, packed to the rafters with so many treasures? Right at the base of Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, site of one of the fiercest battles of the Civil War. Dahlia Dutton leads her salvage crew with an appropriately iron hand, but she is dangerously susceptible to the allure of the haunted house she is commissioned to tear apart. The spirits who haunt the place feel her softness toward them, and they respond with diabolical vengeance. It’s an old story.
The Family Plot delivers a double helping of fun: A prospectus of auction items worthy of Southern Living is served up alongside a tale of gothic suspense woven from the familiar fabric of lost war ballads, flavored with the bitter twang of ingrown family evils and hypocritical Confederate piety. For Priest, as for her vulnerable protagonist, the more traditional the object, the more valuable it’s got to be.

Happy Halloween and thanks for reading.

Ian McEwan - Nutshell - Book Review

Ian McEwan - Nutshell - Book Review: In novels like Atonement and Sweet Tooth, Ian McEwan has enjoyed playing tricks with questions of his narrator’s identity. His devilishly clever and darkly humorous novel Nutshell takes another step in that direction, revealing the arc of a bizarre murder plot from the point of view of the ultimate unreliable narrator: a child in utero, two weeks away from birth. McEwan’s...

Jonathan Safran Foer - Here I Am - Book Review

Jonathan Safran Foer - Here I Am - Book Review: Has Jonathan Safran Foer spent the 12 years since his last novel solely exchanging email LOLs with actress Natalie Portman? Not quite. Foer’s much-anticipated third novel, Here I Am, has arrived. "COMMONWEALTH" BOOK REVIEW

 Reserve your copy today.  Thanks for reading.

About the Book

The acclaimed, bestselling author—winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Orange Prize—tells the enthralling story of how an unexpected romantic encounter irrevocably changes two families' lives.
One Sunday afternoon in Southern California, Bert Cousins shows up at Franny Keating's christening party uninvited. Before evening falls, he has kissed Franny's mother, Beverly—thus setting in motion the dissolution of their marriages and the joining of two families.
Spanning five decades, Commonwealth explores how this chance encounter reverberates through the lives of the four parents and six children involved. Spending summers together in Virginia, the Keating and Cousins children forge a lasting bond that is based on a shared disillusionment with their parents and the strange and genuine affection that grows up between them.
When, in her twenties, Franny begins an affair with the legendary author Leon Posen and tells him about her family, the story of her siblings is no longer hers to control. Their childhood becomes the basis for his wildly successful book, ultimately forcing them to come to terms with their losses, their guilt, and the deeply loyal connection they feel for one another.
Told with equal measures of humor and heartbreak, Commonwealth is a meditation on inspiration, interpretation, and the ownership of stories. It is a brilliant and tender tale of the far-reaching ties of love and responsibility that bind us together.

Letter: ‘Doing it right’

Customer service is alive and well at the Mount Pleasant branch of the Charleston County Library. I am a retired citizen who uses the Mount Pleasant library about three times a week.

I check out books, movies, and eBooks. The staff is unbelievably helpful and friendly. The amazing thing is this is a government agency, yet the level of service surpasses many for-profit businesses. Someone there (actually everyone) is really doing it right.

Anton DiSclafani - The After Party - Book Review

Anton DiSclafani - The After Party - Book Review: With just one previous book under her belt, author Anton DiSclafani has already made a name for herself as a writer whose female protagonists dare to be different. Her debut novel, The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls, was a titillating coming-of-age tale set in a world of privilege in the 1930s South; it rocketed to the top of summer must-read lists and was one of the most buzzed-about...
