INDEPENDENT FILM SERIES

Do you enjoy foreign films?  Some people don't like subtitles, but if you try a movie with subtitles, after awhile you probably won't even think about them.
The Main library will be showing independent films starting on the third Thursday in August.  Many of the films are foreign.

Why watch a foreign film?  These films provide an opportunity to see how other cultures live, work, eat, laugh, and deal with problems, etc. If you're trying to learn a new language, it's a chance to practice listening and comprehending a language.  The stories are usually quite interesting.

Film Movement Series
Thursday, August 21, 6:00 PM
Main Library
The Iran Job. Not rated; 95 minutes.
At the height of international tension between America and Iran, Kevin Sheppard, a charismatic African-American basketball player accepts an offer to play professional basketball in Iran. What begins as a desire to "explore the unknown" ends in an emotional roller-coaster as he forms an unlikely alliance with three young Iranian women against the backdrop of revolutionary social upheaval in Iran.

If you can't make it to the Main Library, check our catalog for independent films that are available for check out, or contact the reference desk at Mt. PleasantLibrary  (843-849-6161) for more information. Many of them are produced by Film Movement production company and can be found by typing "Film Movement" in the search box.

We have a large collection of foreign films. I watched one with my 11 year-old grandson recently and he enjoyed it.  It's a Czech film called "Kolya" and is the story of a 5 year-old Russian boy who is left with a Czech musician who knows nothing about children, and speaks no Russian.  It's a very moving story.
Another great foreign film that won an Oscar is "Departures," about a young Japanese musician who loses his job, and to his embarrassment, has to work as an undertaker.

Thanks for reading.
